Hello, Yes its been a while but I promise it was worth it! Started in the Summer of 2008 and then eventually finished this year as 2 70 odd minute mixes, the Summer mix as it is known has been listened to and refined many times to form the sexy seamless whole I present today. Part 1 is the slower and more eclectic mix taking in Hip Hop, Shoegazer Pop, Psych Rock, RnB, House, Krautrock, Electronics and plenty other stuff. Check out the tracklist, Its all good!

Death of The Mixtape Xmas special 2008

Merry Christmas!!
I’m not gonna claim to have made the ultimate Xmas mix but I’m damn sure it’s the most demented you’re gonna hear this festive yuletide. Just as a few notes to give a little background to the choices- The 3 tracks by one artist are by Sufjan Stevens and are spread throughout the mix. All are from his Christmas songs 5CD box set that comes highly recommended (& is less than a tenner in some shops). As noted below all the interludes (& the Tony D’Money track) are from my favourite Xmas record ever, Cassette Boy’s Festive Christmas. Hell Interface are usually known as Boards Of Canada, this track was released along with the V/Vm & Gorse tracks on the infamous V/Vm Test Records label. The Fall track was a difficult choice, I nearly picked ‘No Xmas For John Quays’ but swayed towards ‘Jingle Bell Rock’ from a Christmas themed session they did for John Peel in 1994.

Squarepusher is the fucking daddy. I can still remember the shock & awe I felt when I saw the "Come On My Selector" video for the 1st time on late night MTV (when MTV still showed music videos, WTF happened there?!?!?!).
These 2 mixes are a celebration of that feeling of being smashed repeatedly around the head with a 2lb lump hammer. In a good way.

Dubstep Mix

This mix is a redux of a mix I did last year with all the filler taken out and fresh dub put in. Dubstep is easily the best and fastest moving genre of the noughties. From its origins in two step garage, grime and drum & bass it has branched out over the last year or 2 to encompass Berlin dub techno, minimal, hip hop, digidub & loads of bits of other stuff without losing touch with its core dancefloor responsibilities. This mix is mainly a primer for Dubstep newcomers but I think there's plenty for the most hardened stepper to enjoy. Tracklist available on request.

Major pace change here. Instead of the usual beats & stuff this mix is a sedate and at times quite moody piece. It utilizes a combination of Soundtrack music (Some of which was downloaded from the excellent Manchester Morgue blog) and original material from a few different sources (Including the Type & Digitalis samplers from Boomkat)
There are some lovely piano pieces on there as well as some drone & some electronics & orchestral stuff.

Hello. Well its a little late but here is my latest mix, and unlike all of the other mixes this has been mixed live on my decks from slabs of real vinyl. It has been part inspired by receiving a mix from my far east bound buddy Barrington James III which his mate had done. And the other part inspired by the computerised mixes not really coming together as planned.

I will apologize for the (lack of) mixing but "it's all about the tunes man", and there are some top songs on here, some old, some new all quality. It has a mostly Hip Hop feel but stretches out to fit some Dubstep, Techno and even a nice surprise at the end.

I've got 2 mixes in my head at the moment swimming around with all the rest of the shite in there. 1 is a nice Dubstep/Techno mix mainly because thats what i'm listening to a lot of, and 2 is a mental dance mix that is all about the ass shaking tunes. Happy Birthday To Me! + Cheeky Minimal Techno Mix

Hello fellow freak & geeks and welcome to my 1st annual birthday message and mix. Just been out to Manchester buying all sorts of stuff I didn't need (trainers [Stan Smiths], t-shirt [Superdry], records & cds [Pinch & Emperor Machine], I would have bought some comics too if they had issue 43 of The Walking Dead) I received some pretty cool stuff too (A book & CD of photographs & music from the films of Dario Argento & the soundtrack to Blood on Satans Claw [not got this yet but it does count!] + peanut M&M's and Erdinger)


Went to see I Am Legend on the IMAX screen at the printworks which was a lot better than I thought it would be, and although not a patch on the peerless original novel or NOTLD which took influence from the novel, was an enjoyable waste of 2 hours.



Anyway onto the mix. To provide contrast with the slightly populist nature of my previous mix this is a full on minimal techno workout that starts off nice and easy before becoming more complex in the middle, adds a touch of dubstep/techno then goes totally mental at the end.

This is my version of the I'm sorry I haven't got a clue game "one song to the tune of another". In simpler terms I got hold of a load of Hip Hop accapellas (the rapping without the music) and splashed them liberally over a load of instrumental stuff. Some of it is obvious and poppy as hell but other bits are fairly underground. Its one for parties where you want to please everyone especially yourself. Hope you like them as I worked damn hard putting them together.

Best Of 2007 (Not necessarily in the correct order)

1 Disrupt - Foundation Bit (Werk)
Digital laptop reggae made in the former East Germany! Top beats & bass action with all manner of binary code dub slop thrown on top. This is exactly what King Tubby would sound like if he was raised in the film Tron. Can you really get any better than a computerised cover version of Lee Scratch Perry's Doctor On The Go with the Bomb #20 scene from Darkstar sampled on top? The Jahtari website (Disrupts home turf) has a free download of a dub version of the International Karate + theme! Geek Dub heaven!

2 Burial - Untrue (Hyperdub)
Mysterious Dubstep/2-step producer Burials 2nd album follows on from where the 1st left off but with a little more light & shade. The vocal samples that adorn the majority of the record give it a poppier feel that never lapses into cheesey, and it still carries the Bladerunner sheen that made the first record so good. Deserves to be talked of in the same hushed reverence as 'Selected Ambient Works 85-92', 'Timeless' & 'Leftism'. Class.

3 Porn Sword Tobacco - New Exclusive Olympic Heights (City Centre Offices)
Static drenched ambience, narcotic lullabies, 70's wildlife film soundtracks. This is the sort of music that Boards of Canada used to promise in the late 90's but dont really deliver anymore. PTS's 3rd album brings equal amounts of atmosphere, melody and mischief to the table. The only problem is the very silly band name which always gets laughed at when people ask me what i'm listening to. Other than that there is plenty to recommend here (however difficult that is).

4 Ween - La Cucaracha (Rounder)
Classic Ween! All the stuff that makes Ween so great is right here. Whatever they turn their hands to comes up purest brown in the very best way. Particularly surprising is Geners cheeky English sneer on the new wave rocker Shamemaker and his Anthony & the Johnsons type croon on Lullaby. Deaner comes correct too with the balls out offensive rocker My Own Bare Hands and the sweet philly soul of Sweetheart In The Summer. (I am biased though because Ween are my favourite band in the world ever. Hail the Boognish!).

5 Ricardo Villalobos - Fabric 36 (Fabric)
Minimal Techno / Ketamine House! Not Rickys best (That honour IMO goes to 2005's Achso EP) but still offers the highest quality minimalism you can lay your hands on in 2007. Ostensibly a mix CD for the Fabric series, it actually holds all brand new Villalobos material and should be considered as his latest album. 4/4 beats with rattling, at times ethnic percussion builds to euphoric proportions without ever submitting to the bloated excesses of most modern dancefloor house.

6 Skull Disco - Soundboy Punishments Vol. 1 (Skull Disco)
The ascent of Dubstep in 2007 has thrown up some weird and wonderful styles, none more so than Shackleton & Appleblim on their own Skull Disco label. Eschewing the UK garage & D&B breakbeats of most Dubstep in favour of African styled drums & elements of dub techno, the soundboys also knock out bass drops that could fell elephants from 50 metres. This is the compilation of the 1st 4 Skull disco 12"s along with tracks for other labels and (IMO) it's a truly original psychedelic dance record that sounds like nothing else in 2007 (or any other time).

7 Stars Of The Lid - And Their Refinement Of The Decline (Kranky)
I heard one track on this album from a Kranky sampler last year and fell for Brian McBride and Adam Wiltzie straight away. This double album has a majestic quality without being overbearing, too tuneful to be considered ambient but too spacious to be modern classical. Songs start and seem to hover around melodies before woodwind and brass cut through the electronic fuzz. Every melody is beautiful and never outstays its welcome & theres a deadpan sense of humour at work, exemplified by the Fulhum FC sample and title reference on Dopamine Clouds Over Craven Cottage.

8 Various - Now We Are Ten - A Trunk Records Sampler (Trunk)
Not really much you can say about Jonny Trunks label other than its one of the the most consistent and challenging labels on earth. His amazing ability to uncover buried treasure has seen him accused of being a witch or a timetraveller! Although a bit too heavy on the flute at times, Trunk 1st cut price sampler shows the spread of music they have gifted us from weird jazz to horror soundtracks, primitive electronica to 70's kids tv folk music and a cheeky (at times filthy) sense of humour. (includes the number 27 smash hit The Ladies Bras, at 36 seconds the shortest song ever to chart!).

9 Panda Bear - Person Pitch
With a printed influence list longer than most peoples record collections, Panda Bear (Noah Lennox to his mates) could be accused of stretching himself too thin. On repeated listening however, all the distinct strands of music from 60's pop through to Berlin dub techno mesh together to make a record that is as lovely as it is (at times) disorientating. The stock comparison of "Brian Wilson with a sampler" isn't too wide of the mark especially considering how ace that would be.

10 Xela - For Frosty Mornings & Summer Nights (2007 Edition) (Type)
Recorded between 2000 & 2002 while Xela was working at Halfords then released in 2003, then re-released in 2007 with new artwork and a couple of extra tracks. Despite the years involved it still sounds remarkably fresh. Glitchy electronics and hip hop beats frame the sublime melodies but the joy here is how understated the whole lp is. The best track Bobble Hats In Summer moves at a snails pace with a drum loop that sounds like it was built from heavy machinery before a classical piano interlude sparks the song into life about 5 minutes in. Pure class from one of the best electronic artist in music today.

The cover version is much maligned artform mainly thanks to total tosspots like Mark Ronson. Its not all bad though as the attached mix demonstrates. Lots of cool tunes you'll know and some you won't. On some you might know the tune but not who's doing it or recognise the song and not know it was a cover. You can have some fun by trying to identify the song, who's covering it and who recorded the original (If thats what gets you off!) Guaranteed Ronson free!

3 part mix that starts at a mid pace and ends up banging. A bit more indie and hip hop than my other mixes & has one or two surprises as well as a couple of mixes that wound up in the funky Redux.

The Funky Redux

This mix combines the best bits and pieces of mixes I did this year combined with lots of new stuff I like to form probably the best mix I have ever, ever done.

Punky funk, funky punk, hip hop, house, minimal techno, pop, northern soul, dubstep, indie, garage rock and I think thats it. If you have a passing interest in dancey sorts of music there should be something there for you. If you would like a tracklisting drop me a line and we'll get it done.

First Tings First

Here is the first bit of a mix I knocked together earlier this year. It uses A number of Beastie Boys Accapellas they gave away on their website a while ago and I've spliced them with some cheeky dance tracks and some of their own stuff to passable effect. In time I hope to post the other 2 mixes that complete the set but I wanted to post a favorite of mine as the first addition.
